Instructor Bios

Jenny Lester

Raised in Smithers, BC on bluegrass music with her family as the Driftwood Canyon Family band, achieving a degree in music at South Plains College, Texas, performing in many bands from Colorado, Taiwan and Australia, Jenny is now an internationally received performing artist with the Yukon based group Hungry Hill. Along side of performing, her years of experience as a teacher of guitar, fiddle and voice extends past the studio to the release of 3 instruction DVDs released by Mel Bay publications.

Ben Brookes

Ben has taught guitar in the Bulkley Valley for 4 years.  He has instructed at the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Societies Adult and Youth Guitar Camps and has performed locally with various bands including Ribcage, Foxy Autopsy, Wolfchild and The Vapour Daddies.

Mark Thibeault

Mark has recorded and performed with The Grapes of Wrath, The Undertakin Daddies and presently with Canadian Folk Music Award nominee for Best Ensemble, Hungry Hill.  Mark plays lap steel, resonator guitar, pedal steel, electric and acoustic guitar in several styles of music and has a keen understanding of the core rhythmic and melodic elements that are shared between but also differentiate and define musical genres.

Scott Atchison

With musical influences ranging from early "ska" and running all the way to "western swing", Scott Atchison has played in his fair share of bands along the way. He continues to refine his multi-instrumentalist chops on guitar, mandolin, resonator, weissenborn, banjo, lapsteel, and ukulele. A 10 year veteran of the Bulkley Valley music scene, Scott has performed regularly alongside Mark Perry, Hungry Hill, and most recently Rachelle Van Zanten, while also recording several CD's with the now defunct Colorado "alt-bluegrass" band "Raised on Rhubarb". A lifelong student of music himself, he has taught "Fingerstyle" and "Swing" Guitar, vocal (harmony singing) workshops, as well as "Mandolin for Guitar Players" at the Bulkley Valley Guitar Camp in years past. Scott continues to teach, write, perform, and record his own unique "folk-island-blues-alt-grass" style tunes here in Smithers.

Mark Perry

Mark is one of BC’s finest singer songwriters, with a total of seven albums to his credit, with his latest compilation of favourites just released in 2009.  He has performed at numerous folk festivals, coffee houses and concerts throughout BC.  Mark has opened for Connie Kaldor all over Western Canada and continues to play from Calgary to Victoria, performing songs with a small town slant.  In 1990 he worked on the first of his 2 albums with Roy Forbes.  The album “Dreams of the Highway” earned him a nomination for roots traditional album at the West Coast Music Awards.  Mark’s music has been featured on CBC, and he has appeared on Murray McLauglin’s “Swinging on a Star” radio program.  A hockey game on a frozen lake, dying towns and towns being born, a railroaders last trip, characters, painters, laughs and tragedies are sketched out in his songs.

George Stokes

When George was a kid he would sneak into his sister's room and "borrow" her guitar and chord charts. After being caught repeatedly he got a guitar of his own and has been playing ever since. George has played live in many living rooms, coffeehouses and festivals along the way. Quite some time ago George picked up the bass and has thumped away on that too.  When George isn't in front of a mic or an audience he can often be found behind a sound board as a sound man or monitor guy.  George will be offering his expertise at Camp as "Beginner Guitar" instructor as well as instructing "Survival Sound for Musicians".

Course Descriptions

Adult Guitar Camp 2011 Courses

Here are the classes you can look forward to at Smithers’ Adult Guitar Camp August 15-20. There is the possibility of some changes, but we have confirmed that these will be our instructors……and remember there’s always fun and practice time when you’re not in class!

JENNY LESTER
Easy Songs and Beginner Melodies with Jenny Lester
No bar chords. Lots of singing and accompanying yourself on popular songs that have 2 or 3 chords and not a lot of fast changes. Gain some muscle memory for finding the melody notes inside of chord shapes then have a chance to apply them with rhythm support. Caution, may lead to the ability to improvise.

Bluegrass & Roots Music Rhythm with Jenny Lester
Focusing on acoustic guitar in straight 4/4, 3/4 and jig time with strong dynamics and slow to fast tempos. Supporting rhythm for songs and instrumentals. Learn how to find keys, transpose and communicate to other musicians to enjoy the social aspect of roots music.

MARK PERRY
Songwriting with Mark Perry
Learn how your thoughts, ideas, situations and experiences can be communicated through song. Having something you want to say is the first step, but there is a lot of structure, editing and refining to create a song that gets your message out there. Bring a song you’ve been working on, or some of those ideas rattling around in your head, or just come to learn the process used by many successful songwriters.

Accompanying Yourself with Your Guitar with Mark Perry
Learn how your choice of chords, progressions, strumming or picking style can complement and enhance your performance.

BEN BROOKES

Out there Acoustics with Ben Brookes Take yourself out of the box and get playing a contemporary edge experiment with reggae, funk, and rock styling's geared to be played on the acoustic guitar. Wild strumming patterns, crazy chords and insane scales. Something different but fun fun fun. Beginner to intermediate flatpickers.

Basic Improvisation, chord construction and theory 101 with Ben Brookes
Learn how to play melodies over different chord progressions in any key, navigate your fret board with ease. Learn the application of relative minor, major, blues scales, apply basic chord extensions to chords you already know. This course is geared towards beginner/intermediate flat picking players.

SCOTT ATCHISON
Intermediate or Intro to Fingerstyle Guitar with Scott Atchison:
This course is designed for the folks who want to break out of the “strum” rut. We’ll introduce the infinite possibilities of learning to incorporate melody, bass, and rhythmic accompaniment into one style. We’ll cover basic picking patterns and learn how to incorporate the melody into your playing style, and learn a few simple fingerstyle tunes. The course will focus on the fundamentals of right-hand technique and alternating bass exercises, while more advanced players will be challenged to arrange a fingerstyle version of one of their favorite tunes.

Introduction to Open Tuning : Learn alternate ways of tuning your guitar to expand your style.

MARK THIBEAULT:
Flatpicking Blue Grass Style The course title says it all!

Introduction to Soloing with Mark Thibeault
We will learn one scale across and up the fingerboard. Using that scale we will begin to explore melodies. Changing the timing of the melody and using different note substitutions we will learn how to improvise and solo affectively. Soloing will be encouraged.

GEORGE STOKES:

Beginning Guitar with George Stokes: Rank beginners, no problem, we’ll have you playing tunes in no time. Learn basic chords, flat/finger picking and a song or two. Rank beginners, not for long.

Introduction to Swing with George Stokes: This is an introduction to playing swing rhythm and chord basics. Learn to play movable chord forms up and down the neck. We’ll discuss how swing chord progressions work, and how to create a swing solo, eventually incorporating these techniques into several swing standards.

Headliners

Meet the 2011 Midsummer Music Festival headliners!

The Lee Boys

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steeel ensembles. This family group consists of three brother, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7 string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. Here they underwent a rigorous course of training in a variety of musical instruments, including lap and pedal steel guitars. Born and raised in Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father and grandfather, Rev. Robert E. Lee, was the pastor and a steel player himself.

“Sacred steel” is a type of music described as an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a hard-driving, blues-based beat. The musical genre is rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and ideas from other nations.

Their unique sound has attracted musical artists such as Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Michelle Shocked, Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks Band w/Susan Tedeschi, The North Mississippi Allstars, and The Del McCoury Band, just to name a few, and all who have played with The Lee Boys and/or invited them to tour with them.

Headwater

Hearing Headwater is like listening to the West Coast of Canada in song. Freewheeling, fierce, sentimental and sexy, the Vancouver, B.C., quartet has earned its reputation as one of the finest acoustic roots groups around the old-fashioned way.

They work their asses off.

Since forming in 2001, the group has logged in thousands of kilometres criss-crossing Western Canada and playing to anyone and everyone willing to give it some love. With hooks, driving rhythms, adventurous steel guitar and mandolin solos, and beautiful three-part vocal harmonies all featured in tight, concise under four-minute songs, they found fans fast. Or they roped them in at first, street busking before gigs rather than hanging out waiting for crowds to come to them.

Aurora Jane

Fronted by one of the world’s most exciting female guitar players, Aurora Jane's new sound has been likened to having the fluidity and excitement of a Hendrix Experience, with the deep groove of ‘Blood Sugar’ era Chili Peppers, and the retro get-up-and-dance stylings of 70’s P-Funk. Her latest album 'Deep End' has been making waves around the world. She's "Not a plain Jane" (Rolling Stone, India)

The 28 year old Australian artist, has been touring the globe since 2004, her impressive tour history includes: multiple tours of India (where she is signed to Blue Frog Records alongside John McLaughlin), and has headlined Roots Festival, Pubrockfest & World Music Festival – Ladakh; Canada (in 2008 & 2010 headlining Robson Valley Music Festival); Europe (2008), and endless circuits of her home-turf in Australia where she has opened for John Butler Trio, Blue King Brown & The Waifs, and played countless festivals including: Festival of the Sun, Woodford Folk Festival & Island Vibe Reggae Festival.

The Fugitives

The Fugitives are the combined talents of Vancouver artists Adrian Glynn, Barbara Adler, Brendan McLeod, and Steve Charles. A group of multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, poets and novelists, each with their own burgeoning solo career, they’ve won individual accolades as diverse as the Canadian SLAM poetry championship, CBC poet laureate, and a place in the Peak performance songwriting series. But their primary focus lies in banding together to integrate their sensibilities into a dynamic mix of modern folk.
Formed four years ago on Vancouver’s East Side, The Fugitives have trod their instruments and words numerous times through Canada and Europe Performances that began in abandoned bank vaults and small vegetarian restaurants in England have turned into mainstage appearances on the Canadian folk festival circuit and sold out headlining shows at venues as diverse as the Vienna Literary Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and the Chutzpah Dance Festival.

Rick Scott

Rick Scott is an award winning singer, songwriter and actor who combines music and laughter in lively, participatory concerts for all ages. He is Canada’s leading proponent of the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, known by kids around the world as ‘The Electric Snowshoe.’ Over 35 years he has released 17 albums and performed his lively, original music in nine countries. His gift for combining wacky humour and poignant human commentary has earned him a devoted following from four generations around the world.
Over the past 20 years Rick has performed more than a thousand family concerts throughout Canada, the U.S., Australia and Southeast Asia. He is Goodwill Ambassador for the Down Syndrome Research Foundation and performs inspirational keynote concerts for familes, educators and caregivers, and MUSIC AS A SECOND LANGUAGE song writing workshops for people who don’t think that they’re musical.

MIP Power Trio

In May 2009, 3 eclectic Canadian musicians came together to play a “totally mipped out” set at the El Mocambo. While Mip is the title artist and songwriter, it is by the powers of Mip, percussionist Jaash Singh (Om Laila, Lemon Bucket Orkestra, Blind Cats), and bassist Greg Kowalczyk (Blind Cats, Skullians) combined that the Mip Power Trio is in full force.

Smart lyrics, quirky melodies, dynamic arrangements, and explosive live performances only begin to define the Mip Power Trio experience. Mip is a champion of neo-retro rock n' roll embodying the spirit of vintage rock and the heart and soul of an eccentric minstrel.

http://www.mipsmusic.com/

Emilyn Stam and James Stephens of the trio "Eh?!"

About "Eh?!"

Eh?! is a new collaborative fiddle-based trio. Eh?! combines an unparalleled depth of knowledge of traditional Canadian music from throughout the country with innovative original expression.

Emilyn Stam

Emilyn is a young pianist and fiddler who worked closely with Oliver Schroer as a founding member of Twisted String. She is quickly being recognized as a brilliant improviser, composer, and creative collaborator. She has worked with Pierre Schryer, Daniel Lapp, David Woodhead, Anne Lindsay, Bill Brennan, Casey Sokol, Soozi Schlanger and Jaron Freeman-Fox. Emilyn recently released her debut album, Holding Time.

James Stephens

James is known both for his work as a performer/composer and as a producer/recording engineer. In performance, he plays a multitude of stringed instruments with an emphasis on fiddling. He has an abiding interest in various traditional styles and also works extensively with singer-songwriters. He was the principal songwriter in critically acclaimed pop/roots band “Fat Man Waving” and has performed with Lynn Miles, Ian Tamblyn, Melwood Cutlery, and Terry Tufts. Currently he performs with The Brian Picknell Band, Finest Kind, Ecosse, renowned clawhammer banjo player Ken Perlman and JIIG.

Chad Graves and Mark Cassidy of The Hillbenders

Undeniably the hottest young band on the acoustic scene, The HillBenders have been winning over audiences from coast to coast with their unique style, original compositions and relentless drive. These buzz-worthy bluegrass whiz-kids are quickly rising above many of their peers and gaining international recognition for their aggressive combination of contemporary influences with traditional inspiration and instrumentation, as well as their infectiously energetic stage performances.

Formed in the spring of 2008, the band's members hail from distant corners of the U.S. but now base themselves in Springfield, MO. Rooted in the traditions of bluegrass, The HillBenders push the boundaries of the genre by combining influences from country, rock, blues, jazz and Americana into their sound to produce something entirely new. Some say it's newgrass, some say it's bluegrass, some say it's neither, but everyone says that whatever it is, it's incredible!

Blackberry Wood

Blackberry Wood is a wonderful, secret and magic combination of alt-country-gypsy-circus music. A high-energy cabaret spin on old and modern music adding spicy flavours like exotic world beats, jumpin' ska, folk, punk ‘n many other irresistible body shakin’, foot stompin’ delights to their original and timeless-musical-down-home-ol’ style adventures. Blackberry Wood comes down the road like a travelling caravan, with all kinds of wondrous instruments, vocal melodies and fantastically costumed characters. Playing over 300 shows since 2007, Blackberry Wood has kicked up dust in towns all over Western Canada, the United Kingdom and parts of the United States.

About the BVFMS

Our Beginnings...

The Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society grew out of an organization called the Styx River Coffee House. A group of dedicated music lovers decided a music festival would be a good idea for the Bulkley Valley and so went to work on forming a non-profit society as well as start the first Midsummer Folk Music Festival. The society was incorporated as a non- profit society in 1984. The Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society joined the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council in 1985 to blend the services offered by each of the organizations (ie. liability insurance).

The BVFMS purpose

To promote a greater appreciation of folk music among residents of the Bulkley Valley and the northwestern region of British Columbia.
To provide opportunities for folk musicians to play for audiences.
To provide opportunities for residents of the Bulkley Valley to hear folk Music and folk musicians from other areas.
To promote the development of folk music and musicianship in the Bulkley Valley.

BVFMS

The Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society is a nourishing body for the musical soul of the Bulkley Valley in northwestern British Columbia. We are a thriving community of creative and talented musicians and appreciators. We are all ages, shapes and genres. We host 2 Guitar Camps each year - one for adults and one for youth – that draw teachers and students from across North America. We host a music festival each summer for 30+ inspiring acts and 3,000+ attendees who travel here from the across the north as well as the globe. The BVFMS is located in Smithers BC, the heart of the Bulkley Valley, approximately half way between the major centers of Prince George and Prince Rupert.
